EastEnders’ Denise tries to escape Lucas

Hello and welcome to A Slice Of Soap. There’s still time to enter this week’s caption competition so get scribbling and make us all laugh. What’s going on in the soaps this week? Let’s find out (spoilers ahead).

EastEnders w/e Friday 30 July

It looks like the EastEnders writers are going to have to work a little harder for their money. Readers of this blog have been speculating about Denise Johnson’s fate – Tricia Sutherland and Alison, guessed the direction the scriptwriters were taking the storyline. Congrats to you two!

The Lucas Johnson storyline continues to attract a great deal of controversy; to be honest with you, I find it so ridiculous that I’m not even going to waste energy getting riled up about it.

So this week, we see more of Denise as she’s holed up in the cellar. Lucas has given her a bible, photos of her family and tinned food, but can she escape? Zainab steps up to help Denise’s family with their grief. Peggy has a flamboyant new flatmate.

Max battles with the fallout from seeing more of Darren than he intended. Meanwhile Denise challenges Lucas as he continues to hold her captive.  Phil gets a shock when the social comes calling. Fat Boy’s blagging causes him strife with Dot.

Phil makes a significant decision regarding Louise. Darren follows the path of true love. Lucas finds solace from an unlikely source. The Square gets together for a good old-fashioned game of rounders; always makes me laugh when they do things like this.

I still crack up over the famous ‘snow fight’ scenes. Elsewhere, Chelsea and Libby’s differences threaten to tear their family apart. Phil and Peggy pay Ben a visit with disastrous consequences. Darren makes a huge sacrifice to save his relationship with Jodie. Liz Max faces a big dilemma. Lucas reflects on recent events, while Denise – now back with her family – tries to fix her broken loved ones.

Emmerdale w/e Friday 30 July

I couldn’t believe it when I first read it so I’m not surprised to learn that LA Law star Amanda Donohoe, who plays Natasha Wylde, has announced that she’s leaving Emmerdale. The Golden Globe-winning actress has been in the soap for two years. This news will come as something of a blow because actress Alice Coulthard (Maisie Wylde) is also on her way out.

Who would’ve put money on actor Lyndon Ogbourne being the lone surviving Wylde? Maxwell Caulfield, who played Mark, was first out the door. Question is, where does this leave Lyndon’s character Nathan?

So this week, there’s a shock in store for the Wyldes, but I’ll come to that in a minute. Marlon informs the family that Shadrach’s gone. Diane heads off on holiday. Sam comes across something sinister in the woods; a clue – it’s ‘Wylde’ in the woods… The police begin to investigate the discovery of Mark’s body. Nathan tries to hold his nerve as the police question the family.

Learning Mark’s body’s been found, Cain burns the dead man’s wallet. Elsewhere, Zak reflects on Shadrach’s departure. Police pressure on the Wyldes mounts when Nathan’s arrested. Ryan and Faye are questioned about Mark’s murder. Carl’s not impressed that Jimmy will be leaving him in the lurch. Nathan’s shocked to learn Mark’s murder couldn’t have been an accident – he’s even more shocked when he’s arrested and held on remand.

Zak’s adamant that Shadrach should have a good send off. Nathan angrily threatens Natasha after confronting her about Mark’s murder. Edna worries about Eve’s debt. Bob tries to convince Viv to come off the valium.

Carl’s concerned about Chas and Eve’s friendship

Coronation Street w/e Friday 30 July
Readers of this blog may recall that I reported on Strictly Come Dancing for MSN last year. There’s always a soap star or two among the contestants and this year is no different; Tina O’Brien, famous for playing Corrie’s Sarah-Louise Platt, is taking a spin on the dance floor. Where would talent shows be without soap stars, eh?

Of all the soaps I watch, I have to say that nobody does humour like Coronation Street. Audrey’s party was filled with lovely little moments – David’s face, Emily saying that if anyone can pull off a toyboy, Audrey can. Hahaha! This week, Lewis’s mind is sent into overdrive when Audrey says she’d be prepared to sell up for him. Gail’s horrified by her mother’s relationship and her future plans. Liz is getting a lot of attention… but why?

John’s lies catch up with him when he receives an alarming phone call. Really – the whole John Stape thing is as ridiculous as the Lucas Johnson storyline in EastEnders. Elsewhere, Lewis’s sly plan shows he’s not what he seems. Kevin makes Tyrone a generous offer to sell up and move, but will Tyrone accept? John receives a threatening visitor and a shocking ultimatum. Lewis tries to win over disapproving Gail and Liz discovers the reason for her new admirers.

John’s nightmare reaches a terrifying new level when he meets Colin Fishwick. Chesney and Kirk come up with a plan for his party. Liz is furious with Sean. John and Charlotte find themselves in a terrible mess. Lloyd continues to support Cheryl and Russ, but will it lead to violence? A heated struggle between John and Colin results in a fatality.

Hollyoaks w/e Friday 30 July

I’m keeping an eye on the ratings for Hollyoaks and they appear to be a bit healthier. That’s not to say that the soap should rest on its laurels – it shouldn’t. It still isn’t in top gear for me, but there are some encouraging signs. On the news front, fans in Liverpool may have seen Jennifer Metcalfe, Gemma Merna, Jorgie Porter and Hollie-Jay Bowes at an HMV store for a book signing of new hardback Hollyoaks Girls Talk. The book does what it says on the tin.

So this week, Seth and Riley are more than pleased when Heidi’s cousin Mitzeee turns up. Dom jumps out of his skin at Relish as someone smashes a window. Kris refuses to don a suit for his job interview at the bank. Michaela surprises Zak with some disturbing news – she’s got a visiting order to go and see Gaz. Steph prepares for her audition; she’s convinced that she’ll soon be a platinum-selling artist headlining at the Brits.

Cheryl maintains that Heidi sacked her from The Dog because Carl was checking her out. Jem has a word with Carl; she suspects he’s having an affair. Steph’s unhappy about her audition failure and gives up on her showbiz dreams. Michaela’s working on a story about Des the racist, convinced this will make her name as a hot-shot journalist. Elliot meets a friend called Kevin who claims to be an alien – can’t believe I just wrote that. Gilly proposes to Steph, but she’s confused. Jacqui learns the truth about Des.
