Hello and welcome to today’s edition of A Slice Of Soap. There’s still time to enter this week’s caption competition so get scribbling and make us all laugh.
Hey guys, I’m sure that by now that you’ve heard the shocking news that child stars of EastEnders, Charlie Jones, 13, and Melissa Suffield, 17, who play Ben Mitchell and Lucy Beale, are being axed from the show.
The pair have been sacked in a shake-up by soap bosses, who were unhappy with their performances. To add insult to injury, the young actors have also learned that their characters are not being axed with them, instead two new young actors are being brought in to replace them…ouch!!
As you can imagine, Charlie Jones, who’s played the role of Phil Mitchell’s son, Ben, for four years, is said to be "inconsolable".
BBC bosses defended their actions by saying: ‘It’s common practice to recast actors employed as children to take on more challenging adult storylines.’ A source said: "Sometimes a higher level of experience is needed as characters mature."
So, Ben Mitchell will exit EastEnders as part of a "dramatic" storyline involving his stepsister Louise but will return in the future played by someone else.
Melissa Suffield (whose "unruly behaviour" off the set also contributed to her being given her marching orders) will be replaced immediately by another actress…ouch…ouch…ouch!!! I bet she’ll never watch EastEnders again…
Anyway, I don’t know about you soapsters, but I’m gonna miss Charlie Jones as young Ben Mitchell. I don’t care what new EastEnders producer, Bryan Kirkwood , thinks, they ain’t never gonna find another child actor who can play the annoying misfit, Ben Mitchell, as well as Charlie Jones can (and I’m really gonna miss his dancing;nobody can move quite like him).
So, what do you think guys, have EastEnders done the right thing by sacking these two child actors or should the pair have been given more time to mature into their respective roles? Tell us what you think by leaving a comment.
That’s it for me, I’m out of here. Join me on Friday for the result of this weeks caption competition. Got a comment about your favourite soap, this blog or anything else? Share it with me (but keep it clean!).
