Hello and welcome to today’s edition of A Slice Of Soap. There’s still time to enter this week’s caption competition so get scribbling and make us all laugh.
Talk about keeping it in the family…Linus and James Roache, sons of Corrie veteran William Roache (better known to us as Ken Barlow) are to appear alongside their father on Corrie to celebrate the soap’s 50th anniversary.
Apparently Roaches’ sons, who are both professional actors, will appear on the soap in September, as part of a storyline which will see a dark family secret revealed after a letter from the 1960s is found during building work. For now, show bosses are keeping details of their Corrie characters top secret, but insiders predict that they’ll be related to Ken.
Already, fans are speculating that Linus, 46, could play womaniser Ken’s lovechild – while James, 24, could be Linus’s son. Another suggestion is that one of them will play a young version of Ken.
A show source said: "The idea is to use Ken’s character to explore the soap over the past 50 years. It will be like a trip down memory lane with a modern feel."
William said: "I can think of no better way to celebrate my 50th anniversary on Coronation Street than to be working alongside side both of my sons. I am looking forward to it immensely."
Linus has already appeared on Coronation Street, having played Ken’s son Peter briefly in the 1970s. He’s since gone on to star in NBC’s Law and Order, the 2005 movie Batman Begins and the Robert F. Kennedy biographical drama RFK, where he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award. James, meanwhile, has appeared in ITV1’s Cold Blood and BBC One’s The Innocence Project.
Hey, I don’t know about you folks but I’m looking forward to seeing William Roaches’ sons on the cobbles…even if it does make Roach appear a little nepotistic. Anyway, it’ll be fascinating to see the direction that the producers will take the storyline in. So, look out for the pair as the 50th anniversary celebrations get underway this September.
That’s it for me, I’m out of here. Join me on Friday for the result of this week’s caption competition. Got a comment about your favourite soap, this blog or anything else? Share it with me (but keep it clean!).
