Hello and welcome to today’s edition of A Slice Of Soap. Due to problems with my internet, there’s still time to enter this week’s caption competition
as I’ve rolled it over, so get scribbling and make us all laugh.
What’s going on in the soaps this week? Let’s find out (spoilers ahead).
Coronation Street w/e Friday 21 May
efore we move on to the action on’t cobbles this week, a final word about the late Maggie Jones.
I watched ITV1’s Goodbye Blanche several times and each time, I couldn’t get over the irony that it was a frail old woman, and not a sexy, hot young thing, that made it such fun to watch.
Blanche is a true Corrie legend and she turned the Barlows into one of my favourite Coronation Street families.
But that’s all gone now. Or at least, it’s gone until Deirdre turns into her mother and starts harping on at Tracy. Blanche’s granddaughter is at the centre of things this week; at Tracy’s request, Becky visits the prison to talk about Amy but ends up fighting with Tracy.
Becky love – don’t ruin your adoption plans! David steps up his ‘Free Gail’ campaign. Lloyd gets closer to lap dancer Cheryl… Is he finally going to have a successful relationship?
Carla’s whining workforce drives her up the wall. Tracy calls Glynn and Carr, claiming that Gail’s confessed to killing Joe (the scheming minx!). The case against Gail suddenly takes a turn for the worst. Meanwhile, will Hayley’s new wedding dress win Roy over? Izzy goes head to head with Carla in fighting Kirk’s corner. How far will the Platts go to clear Gail’s name?
Also on Coronation Street this weeK:
Kirk’s literally stitched up before his job interview
Gail’s horrified to learn of Tracy’s lie
Graeme blows his chances with Rosie
Hollyoaks w/e Friday 21 May
It may be the soap cliché to end all soap clichés but apparently Oaks’ Ricky Whittle wouldn’t mind an acting career in Hollywood. "That’s something I’d like to do, it’s always an ambition of mine and if the offer came along, I’d jump at the chance," he said. A couple of UK soap stars made it out there (for a little while) – can Ricky Whittle join them? It’s all go for his character Calvin this week; the wedding day approaches, but who’s got the gun? Cheryl detects friction between Malachy and Kris. Lauren’s still furious with Calvin for having her boyfriend Gaz arrested.
Mercedes gets a tongue lashing from Jacqui and Sasha tries to stop Spencer from going to Calvin’s wedding. Gaz and Lauren try to fleece Spencer again. Kris and Cheryl are on tenterhooks as Malachy delivers his best man’s speech. Will Malachy destroy Carmel’s happiness and reveal the awful truth about the affair? Spencer struggles with the terrible news that Calvin left Warren to die. A desperate Theresea runs into Mercedes and makes a shocking confession.
Lauren tells Gaz that she told Calvin about their Spencer baby scam. Suzanne and Darren give into temptation – but will their drunken snog be discovered? And so goodbye Ricky Whittle as Calvin’s shot dead… which of the potential suspects actually pulled the trigger?

EastEnders w/e Friday 21 May
As the great soap cull shows no sign of slowing down, Liam Bergin has insisted that he didn’t get the chop from EastEnders. The Irish actor, who plays dodgy dealer Danny Mitchell, told Inside Soap: "I knew that this was the length of my contract from the beginning." That’s cleared that up then. However, the comings and goings in soapland shows no sign of slowing down; it truly is a sign of the times.
In EastEnders this week, you’ll notice a certain pattern regarding Phil’s behaviour – he’s at odds with just about everyone. Panic over Louise doesn’t help things for Phil when she goes missing. Ben continues to terrorise his half-sister. Janine discovers £500 in Ryan’s bag. Masood’s concerned when Syed suggests leaving the area. Jordan’s annoyed when he sees Louise kicking Trina’s tree.
Stacey panics when she thinks she’s going into labour. Phil and Lucas have an altercation. Roxy’s intrigued when Danny claims that he could double her money. Becca’s not happy that Stacey’s chosen Jean as her birthing partner. Phil finally confronts Ben, knocking him to the ground. Ryan and Janine take matters into the bedroom.
Masood spots Syed with Allen and fears the worst. Stacey’s delighted when Max turns up with a new pram for her. Jordan and Chelsea place a birthday card and candle beside Trina’s tree and Lucas fumes when he sees Jordan scrambling around the base of his mother’s memorial tree. Lucas has an argument with Chelsea that hits a nerve with Denise. Max and Stacey have an emotional chat about Bradley.

Emmerdale w/e Friday 21 May
Every soap needs a nutter or a villain and it looks as if Emmerdale’s most recent one might be back soon. Actress Siân Reeves says she may return to the soap as her unhinged character Sally Spode is currently in a mental hospital, institutionalised as a result of her obsession with vicar Ashey Thomas (John Middleton). I expect her to turn up again; you can’t keep a good baddie down.
So this week, John finds himself in a compromising position with Eve. Doug has a hard time seeing Diane and Charlie together. Maisie encourages Natasha to go for it with
Declan. Meanwhile, Diane’s falling fast for Charlie. Nathan stirs up trouble at the shop. John’s devastated when Moira won’t forgive him. Hannah discovers Holly’s been thrown out of college. Gennie and Bob’s final farewell backfires.
Nathan warns Declan that he’ll never step into Mark’s shoes. Moira coldly warns Eve to stay away from her and her husband. Bob finds himself out on the street when Viv discovers his betrayal. David’s torn over whether to cash-in courtesy of a council contact. John’s forced to tell the kids what happened with Eve. Jamie sees Bob and Gennie kissing. Charlie whisks Diane away to Paris. Adam warns Holly to straighten herself out. Jamie can’t forgive and forget and heads out of the Village…
Also on Emmerdale this week:
John’s forced to pay Cain to keep him quiet
Holly’s proud of Aaron
Natasha’s unimpressed by Declan’s plan to shut the shop
