Hello and welcome to another edition of A Slice Of Soap. There’s still time to enter this week’s caption competition so get scribbling and make us all laugh. We were all saddened to hear about the passing away of the Coronation Street actress Maggie Jones who played the much-loved soap character Blanche Hunt. Jone’s funeral took place at a church in London on December 15th where a private ceremony was attended by cast members and other colleagues as well as family and close friends. At the same time, a minute’s silence was held on the Coronation Street set in Manchester to enable those who couldn’t attend to pay their respects. A spokeswoman for the show said: "It was a beautiful and dignified service."
Speaking on This Morning earlier this week, producer, Kim Crowther confirmed that Maggie’s soap character, Blanche Hunt, will get an on-screen funeral later this year. As some of you may already be aware, the occasion will also see the comeback of Blanche’s wayward granddaughter, Tracy Barlow, played by actress Kate Ford.
Crowther explained: "Blanche’s death seemed the perfect opportunity to introduce Tracy back to the show, as she is released from prison especially to attend the funeral and allowed say goodbye to her grandmother. This won’t be the last we see of Tracy though – she is set to share a cell with a well-known character – who could it be?"
So far, Blanche’s absence from our screens has been explained by an extended break in Portugal, so, her on-screen funeral, which is due to take place later this year, will finally see the legendary soap actresses character laid to rest. The great Maggie Jones is no longer with us, but one thing’s for sure, Blanche Hunt will never be forgotten.
That’s it for me, I’m out of here. Don’t forget to enter this week’s caption competition – can you make us all laugh? I’ll be back again on Friday to announce the results. Got a comment about your favourite soap, this blog or anything else? Share it with me.
