Hello and welcome to another edition of A Slice Of Soap. I’ve had internet woes all day. There’s still time to enter this week’s caption competition so get scribbling and make us all laugh.
Spoiler Alert!!! Corrie actor Reece Dinsdale who plays Gail Platt’s love interest Joe McIntyre is to be killed off in the New Year when an insurance scam goes tragically wrong. Apparently, Joe resorts to the desperate measures after debt collectors threaten to harm his daughter Tina.
According to The Sun, the troubled soul decides to disappear on a boating holiday in the Lake District after his debts spiral out of control. However, in a surprise twist, poor old Joe ends up losing his life when a sail pole knocks him unconscious and into freezing cold water.
Now, if you’re thinking that this storyline sounds a bit familiar, then you’re right. Apparently, the plot almost mirrors the real-life case of fraudster John Darwin, who faked his own death while out canoeing only to turn up alive and well five years later. A Weatherfield source said: "It’s a copycat storyline of Darwin’s insurance scam. Corrie bosses have decided that Joe will meet a watery end. He decides to fake his own death to avoid his crippling debt problems and leave wife Gail with the proceeds from his life insurance."
Hey, isn’t that just typical of Joe? That guy just can’t get anything right can he? But I suppose he can be excused just this once, cos faking your own death while venturing out to sea in a canoe is just the kind of insurance scam that your average ‘Joe’ thinks of doing every day isn’t it?
But who knows, perhaps we haven’t quite seen the last of the poor fella. Maybe in a few years time, the scriptwriters will reveal that Joe actually survived that knock on the head and had actually been living rough on a desert island inhabited by tiny men. Oh no… that’s Gulliver’s Travels innit? But hey, anything’s possible in the soaps these days. Anyway guys, Reece Dinsdale’s final scenes on Coronation Street air in February.
That’s it for me, I’m out of here. Don’t forget there’s still time to enter this week’s caption competition so get us all laughing. Join me on Friday for more soap news and gossip. Got a comment about your favourite soap, this blog or anything else? Share it with me.
