Hello and welcome to today’s edition of A Slice Of Soap. There’s still time to enter this week’s caption competition so get scribbling and make us all laugh.
Hey soapsters, did any of you see Boris Johnson on EastEnders last night? If you blinked (or happened to dose off, cos EastEnders was a bit dreary) then you might have missed him.
It all seemed to happen so quickly. Anyway, BoJo’s much anticipated cameo was watched by nearly 8 million viewers. In his brief, but historic, appearance, the larger-than-life politician appeared in the Queen Vic after having punctured his bicycle tyre.
The Mayor asked Peggy to call him "Boris" instead of "Mister Mayor" and took out a business card, saying: "If you have any ideas how I could help Walford, here is my card".
Not everyone was happy with BoJo’s achievement of being the first politician on the soap. Apparently Ken Livingstone accused the BBC of picking "favourites", complaining that he twice approached producers to appear on EastEnders, but was refused on the grounds that his appearance would be ‘too political.’
Speaking about The Mayor’s appearance on EastEnders last night, a BBC spokesman said: "His appearance is compatible both with BBC editorial guidelines and the principle of due impartiality."
Boris Johnson can now add: ‘drank pint in Queen Vic and exchanged pleasantries with Peggy Mitchell’ to his CV. I wonder who’ll be next? Let’s just hope that Gordon Brown doesn’t get any funny ideas.
Anyway soapsters, what did you think of BoJo’s appearance on EastEnders last night? Was it worth writing home about, or was a big fuss made about nothing? Let us know your views by leaving a comment. In case you missed The Mayor’s historic visit to Albert Square here it is again….
