Hello and welcome to today’s edition of A Slice Of Soap. There’s still time to enter this week’s caption competition so get scribbling and make us all laugh. What’s going on in soapland this week? Let’s find out…
EastEnders w/e Friday July 31
Sad news. Irish-born actor Harry Towb has passed away peacefully after battling cancer for a short time. His long career included loads of stage, TV and film roles. In December 2008, he appeared in EastEnders as David, Janine Butcher’s elderly Jewish fiancée. Our sympathies to his family.
On with the show itself and Ronnie’s love life looks like it’ll be on the up thanks to Ryan. It’s Libby’s 18th birthday and she’s stunned to open one card from her father.
Tamwar and Masood are becoming frustrated with the arguments over Amira and Syed’s engagement party. Bianca tells Ryan that he has to move out. Roxy agrees to meet Ronnie for a drink. Christian and Syed have words and later, Christian runs into a bloke called Luke who beats him up.
Libby’s gran tries to persuade her to visit Owen. Janine’s furious after Ryan dismisses her in favour of Ronnie. It’s not long before the two Rs are snogging away in the cellar – class. Ian discovers that Christian’s been beaten up. Janine steals Ronnie’s address book and causes some mischief. Peggy takes on Ryan as a regular barman. Lucas informs Denise that his divorce papers have arrived. Syed offers to go with Christian to give his statement to the police about the attack and Denise takes offence to Zainab when she criticises her parenting.

Coming up this week, Val is determined to stop Diane getting back together with Rodney, even if it means having to seduce him herself! Now that should be funny to watch. But first, action with Mark Wylde – he tries to get Faye to leave but Cain gives Ryan a job in the garage. What’s more, he seems to be showing a big interest in Faye, the lecherous so-and-so. Ryan squares up to Mark and warns him to stay away from his mother. Val’s still convinced that something’s going on between Diane and Rodney. Edna’s horrified when Lily sets off for her job interview on the back of Eddy’s bike. Determined to stop Rodney from getting back together with Diane, Val dolls herself up in provocative attire and jumps him. When Rodney discovers her true motive, he’s furious.
It all gets messy when Diane witnesses an altercation between the pair and Pollard hears Diane laying into Val. Lexi and Carl are informed that there’s a long wait for IVF and the alternative is too expensive. Lexi’s gutted and tells Carl how useless she feels being unable to conceive. A desperate, Lexi asks Diane if she has any jobs going in the kitchen. Coronation Street w/e Friday July 31
Anne Kirkbride, who plays Deirdre Barlow, was forced to flee her holiday villa in Spain after it was threatened by bush fires. Raging wildfires have been sweeping through the country for the last few days, claiming the lives of six firefighters. Also, the news that Corrie producers will recast the role of Nick Tilsley, lately played by Adam Rickett, makes me wonder who they’ll get to play him. Any suggestions?
This week, Becky and Steve will set a wedding date – let’s hope the second time around is a whole less stupid than the first time. What was that daft episode all about? So this week, devious David offers to try to obtain pills for Joe. Audrey tries to calm Helen’s fears about Tony. It’s Chesney’s birthday but he’s still angry about Fiz’s obsession with John.
Joe’s suffering from withdrawal symptoms, but he tries to hide it from Gail. Becky enters a competition to win a dream honeymoon. Emily and Norris wave Freda off. Rita suggests that Emily and Ramsay might have feelings for each other, but Norris is appalled at the thought. Chesney, furious that Fiz is lying to him, jumps into Rosie’s car and drives off – that’ll teach her not to leave the keys in the ignition. Maria’s off to Ireland; Tony’s disappointed that she’s going but covers his true feelings. David demands that Joe split Jason and Tina up or he won’t get his pill fix. David threatens to tell Gail about Joe’s drug problem.

Tensions rise between Abi and Daniel and Ste begins to feel like he’s in the way. Loretta apologises to Hannah for kissing Darren, but Hannah dismisses it.
