Hello and welcome to today’s edition of A Slice Of Soap. There’s still time to enter this week’s caption competition so get scribbling and make us all laugh. What’s going on in soapland this week? Let’s find out…
Coronation Street w/e Friday July 24
What a week it’s been for Corrie fans. First the sad, but inevitable, news about Bill Tarmey cutting back on Jack Duckworth swiftly followed by reports that Rita Sullivan (Barbara Knox) is quitting The Kabin (for a little while, anyway). Now there are rumours that Tina O’Brien is considering reprising her role as Sarah Louise Platt Grimshaw. Will she return? I bet she does. Watch this space. Back to this week’s happenings and new mum Maria is still adjusting to being on her own with Liam’s son.
There’s more Ashley and Clurrrrr hospital non-drama. I’m not sure what the writers can do to make me get excited about these two. It’s a shame John Savident left because Fred Elliot made them watchable.
Maria’s getting sick and tired of Helen’s interference and asks Tony to rescue her. Norris’ bunions are still causing him grief. Julie encourages Sean to pursue Leon. Deciding to go for the sympathy vote, he pretends to cry and says that Jason has dumped him. Will his tactics work? Claire learns that she was pregnant but has lost the baby. She tells Ashley that she wants him to have the snip. Ken, Deirdre and Blanche attend Peter’s alcoholics meeting. Helen and Barry confront Maria about Tony and Helen ends up calling Maria "a tart". Joe asks Graeme for more pills. Luke agrees to Rosie’s thong design idea. Sean’s alarmed
when Leon turns up at the Rovers to have a drink with Jason.
Also on Coronation Street this week:
Joe steals money from Gail to buy more pills
Tony comforts Maria and it all gets tender
Emily’s niece Freda arrives and meets Ramsay
Emmerdale w/e Friday July 24
Tragedy strikes on Thursday when Rodney Blackstock’s new van crashes into the Home Farm shop, trapping three people. After forgetting to put the handbrake on, Rodney walks away, unaware that the van has begun to roll down the hill, straight towards the shop. Oh dear. So back to the beginning of the week and Faye and Ryan move into Tennant’s house – ooh, I bet Mark will be ecstatic about that. Debbie prepares for her holiday with Sarah and warns Cain not to cause trouble with Andy while they’re away. The Bartons settle into their new home. Believing Butler’s farm to be empty, Zak, Sam and Shadrach steal a herd of sheep.
Cain goads Mark about Faye living in the village. At the Woolpack, Diane’s rushed off her feet when Val swans off with Pollard. In desperation, she asks Rodney to help behind the bar. Zak and John come to an arrangement over the sheep. In the aftermath of the van crash, Doug and Leyla panic as they realise that Ryan isn’t moving. The villagers attempt to rescue them all and all three are taken to hospital. Nathan invites Ryan for a drink in the pub, much to Mark’s distress. He demands that Faye leave the village. John Barton is hailed a hero and Zak invites him for a drink, but John refuses. Can Rodney forget about the accident and move on with his life?
Also on Emmerdale this week:

Lisa is astounded when she discovers who stole the sheep
EastEnders w/e Friday July 24
Talk about a famous cameo! Mayor of London Boris Johnson will make a guest appearance in EastEnders later this year. He will have a run-in with Peggy Mitchell. Mr Johnson said: "EastEnders is a true London icon and I was delighted to highlight to its huge audience the part the mayoralty plays in the city’s rich tapestry." That sounds like it will be worth watching – it will either be really good… or really bad.
On the show itself this week, a fearful Debra says she’s being chased by a man. Later, Whitney comes face to face with the man who’s been following her for the past few months. Stacey’s obsessed with identifying Max’s new woman. Things heat up between Max and Tanya.
Stacey falls and cracks her head on the floor. Lauren and Abi’s cheeky plan to toy with their parents ends in ridiculous disaster. Ronnie returns to the Square, attracting male attention. Whitney gets a big family surprise in the shape of Ryan. Stacey admits her biggest fear – that she’s suffering with bipolar like her mother.
Whitney finds a knife inside Debra’s bag. Bianca accuses Debra of being a bad mother. Max is taken to hospital. Ronnie catches Ryan’s eye and he decides to stay in Albert Square. Jean tells Stacey that she needs to see a doctor. Tanya hands Max a key and asks him to move back into the family home.

Whitney quizzes Ryan about his past
Bianca and Debra have a big row
Jean does her best to help Stacey
Hollyoaks w/e Friday July 24
It won’t come as a surprise to some, but three more members of Hollyoaks will be leaving the show later this year. Junade Khan, Anthony Bunsee and Nila Aalia – who play Ash, Gov and Bel Roy respectively – will bow out in September when the family’s storyline reaches a dramatic conclusion. It’s the same old story with soaps… a big revolving door. People come, people go. This week, Lauren’s devastated when she hears Newt telling Frankie that no girl has ever made him feel as good as Theresa does. Archie has laid a trap to catch the money thief – and Zak’s caught red-handed. But is it him? Lauren decides to take her relationship with Wade to the next step. Ravi’s illness begins to take its toll.
Kris begs him to stop fighting. Lauren’s jealous of Ricky and Anita’s ‘fun’ relationship. It’s the day of the big fight but Ash is torn after learning about Ravi’s brain aneurysm. During post-fight celebrations in the SU Bar, Ravi takes a turn for the worse. Loretta feels a little left out as she watches Nancy, Zoe and Hannah having fun in The Dog. A doctor also suggests that surgery may be the only way to save Ravi’s eyesight. Zoe, Hannah, Nancy and Loretta head out dressed to kill. However, they’re a little disappointed by the man-drought at the SU bar. Loretta reveals that she’s kissed Darren and Hannah gets jealous. Sarah and Lydia settle their differences, while Charlotte is dismayed that they seem closer than ever.
