Peggy Mitchell Voted Soap’s Greatest Matriarch

Hello and welcome to today’s edition of A Slice Of Soap. There’s still time to enter this week’s caption competition so get scribbling and make us all laugh.

Hey soapsters, who in your opinion are among the greatest soap characters of all time? Does Coronation Street’s Hilda Ogden get your vote? Or perhaps EastEnders’ Dirty Den? How about that other legendary soap character Gus Smith played by Mohammed George? He definitely gets my vote… things just haven’t been the same since he was axed from EastEnders last year (for newbies, it’s our little in-joke).

Anyway, after a 10-week vote, Inside Soap magazine has revealed the British public’s most loved soap characters and no prizes for guessing which soap came out on top… EastEnders of course! The BBC soap took the top spot in half of the categories. Coronation Street won four categories, Hollyoaks took one, while Emmerdale failed to top the votes in any category… looks like there’s still some work to do there.

So, wanna know who the great British public voted for then? Well, Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor) was honoured as soap’s greatest ever matriarch, while Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) topped the ‘leading man’ poll.

Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) took the ‘drama queen’ accolade, while the ‘greatest gossip’ title went to Dot Cotton (June Brown).

Corrie psycho Richard Hillman (Brian Capron) was voted as the public’s greatest villain, and Coronation Street’s Bet Lynch (Julie Goodyear) was voted the greatest landlady.

The best ‘bitch’ title went to Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) while Blanche Hunt was voted soap’s all-time greatest comedy character. Hollyoaks’ Ellis Hollins who plays Tom Cunningham, was handed the award for soap’s ‘greatest ever youngster.’  Oh, and  Wellard the dog (remember him?) took the best pet prize.

Speaking of her character’s title, Barbara Windsor said: "I’m really thrilled, darling! What I love about Peggy is that it’s so un-me! I loved doing those scenes where Peggy and Pat fought over Frank, it was terrific. But Peggy hasn’t changed much since."

So soapsters, do you agree with the results the poll or do you think that other soap characters have been overlooked? Tell us your thoughts by leaving a comment.

That’s it for me, I’m out of here. Join me on Friday for the result of the caption competition plus more soap news and gossip. Got a comment about your favourite soap, this blog or anything else? Share it with me.
