EastEnders Triumphs At British Soap Awards

Hello and welcome to today’s edition of A Slice Of Soap. There’s still time to enter the caption competition so get scribbling and make us all laugh.

It seems that EastEnders has won the battle of the British soaps after being voted Best Soap at the British Soap Awards. I’m not surprised that the BBC show got the public’s vote – it frequently does. Makes you wonder why some Corrie stars bother turning up at these things – then again, they can console themselves with free food and booze. However, I am really pleased that Craig Gazey (Corrie’s Graeme Proctor) was voted Best Newcomer; he’s weird, but he’s hilarious. The cast of Hollyoaks left empty-handed but they know how to get noticed on the red carpet as you’ll see from the gallery.

Speaking on the red carpet, EastEnders’ Steve McFadden, now desperately trying – and failing – to remember how to play a convincing drunk rather than a cartoon one said: "It’s the best soap: it’s well written, well acted… you don’t move on until you’ve nailed the scene and that’s really important." He also presented Barbara Winsor with a lifetime achievement award. The ceremony will be broadcast on Wednesday May 18 on ITV1 from 8pm. Here are the winners in full.
