Medical Shock For EastEnders Fave

Hello and welcome to today’s edition of A Slice Of Soap. There’s still time to enter the caption competition so get scribbling and make us all laugh.   What’s going on in soapland this week? Let’s find out…

EastEnders w/e Friday May 1

Commiserations to June Brown for losing out on a Bafta for her Alan Bennett-esque solo EastEnders episode. It’s more than 20 years since a soap performer was last nominated for Best Actress – way back in 1987. And no surprise to learn the nominee was Coronation Street’s Jean Alexander, the legendary Hilda Ogden. She lost out, as June Brown did. But to present day Enders and it’s a big week for Heather Trott. Not only is she set to bear the brunt of Phil Mitchell’s alcoholism but also, a medical check-up reveals a huge surprise…

Masood tells Zainab that he’s not helping Syed. Phil begins to feel uncomfortable about his relationship with Shirley – oh he feels uncomfortable? Watching them in that bed, with those slippers on his feet, nearly made me lose my guts. Yuck.

Heather locks Phil in the Arches to sober up. Billy receives a 50th birthday card from Honey and the kids. Heather suffers an asthma attack and at the clinic, a doctor tells her that something’s shown up on her tests… A mysterious stranger is watching Whitney; that person picks up the notebook that she drops. Roxy’s horrified to find Phil sitting in a pool of his own sick. Jay prepares for Billy’s surprise 50th birthday party meanwhile Billy’s preoccupied by the impending trial for Jase’s murder. A drunken Phil stumbles into the bar and insults Billy. He breaks down and later, confesses to Dot what happened on the night Jase died – totally unaware that Nick’s heard every word. Disgusted about the drinking that’s been going on with Phil, Heather shocks Shirley by announcing that she wants to move out.

Also on EastEnders this week:
Ricky persuades Whitney to go on a date with Todd
Dr Al Jenkins arrives on the Square
Zainab warns Janine to stay away from Syed

Emmerdale w/e Friday May 1

Lock up your daughters because bad boy Cain Dingle returns after a three-year absence. Last seen disappearing to Spain with stolen millions, he has apparently returned a new man. But I don’t believe it for a minute. I’m sure it won’t be long before he’s up to his old deviousness. All this and there’s still the return of Emma Atkins, as Charity Tate, to come. On with the show and Andy insists that Victoria stop trying to contact Daz. Laurel comes across what she thinks is an old war hero begging in the street but it turns out to be Eli. Oh dear… Debbie’s shocked to see Cain and wonders what’s brought him back to Emmerdale. Laurel makes a new acquaintance through her community service – Lizzie Lakely, who turns out to be blind but most definitely not stupid.

Debbie’s happy that Cain’s back and he marches her off to see Sarah. Cain pays the Kings a visit but it ends in a huge punch-up with Carl and Jimmy determining to kill Cain. Fans of bad acting gather around as it’s time for a bit of Wylde action: Mark’s shaken when he receives a text from Faye… how long can he keep her a secret? I’m guessing until somebody cares. Anyway, Jimmy overhears Cain on the phone talking about getting hold of some money; will the Kings outsmart Cain and reclaim their fortune? More Wyldes (in)action – Natasha’s gutted because she’s figured out that Mark’s deceiving her in some way. Cain warns Aaron to stay away from Eli.

Also on Emmerdale this week:
The Dingles give Cain a hero’s welcome
Mark confronts Debbie
Nicola accuses Betty of theft

Coronation Street w/e Friday May 1

There may be some eye-popping revelations (Rita’s gentleman friend Colin provides a few for starters) but let’s admit it. Corrie’s in a bit of a rut at the moment. I feel like the old soap is treading water until a big shark of a storyline comes along and gets it moving. Maybe the return of Ashes To Ashes’ Marshall Lancaster will breathe a bit of life into the cobbles. He’s making a comeback at the end of June as Becky’s wayward ex-boyfriend Slug.

The actor, famous for his role as DC Chris Skelton in the BBC drama, is returning for a longer stint than usual. He was last seen leaving Becky stranded after stealing Roy and Hayley’s car. Now for the bit that will probably make frequent Slice of Soap poster Alan groan – apparently, Slug’s gonna cause havoc as Becky and Steve prepare for their second wedding. If the ‘havoc’ is as stupid as the antics that dominated the first wedding, me and Corrie are done. Over. Finito. Actually, that’s not true – but you know what I mean.

This week’s action sees the Grimshaws move centre stage. Rita and Eileen are planning a surprise party for Colin’s 70th birthday but he stuns Rita with a surprise of his own (no prizes for guessing what it could be – let’s hope he can get up off that bended knee). Fiz visits John in prison. Becky and Steve reach an understanding. Ken checks up on Peter as he prepares to reopen the bookies following the fire. He’s still wallowing in the fact that he and Deirdre don’t share the same interests and can’t help comparing her to Martha. Paula delivers shocking news about Julie.

Jason’s relieved to learn that nothing happened between them. Ken finds himself down at the canal at Martha’s boat. And what does she do? She takes him into the bedroom… I’d like to think that they’ll discuss her curtains cos picturing nookie is just unthinkable. Becky and Amy’s relationship goes from strength to strength and poor Colin collapses.

Also on Coronation Street this week:
Steve starts to understand Becky’s background
Eileen’s shocked when she learns about Julie’s parentage
Blanche is annoyed that Ken won’t share Street gossip

Hollyoaks w/e Friday May 1

Come on – are there any Hollyoaks fans not surprised that actress Gemma Bissix is returning? I, for one, am ecstatic. Every soap needs a good villainess and she was totally wasted on EastEnders. Gemma’s revealed that her character reappears in an "unhinged" state when she returns next month. Am I missing something here? I’m sure Clare was pretty much in an unhinged state when she was on the show?. Anyway, her comeback ties in with the departures of Chris Fountain (Justin Burton) and Jamie Lomas (Warren Fox). Speaking of her return, she told PA: "It’s exciting stuff to come back and play Clare. I don’t think I’ve ever found a character like her – there’s no limit as far as she’s concerned." On with the show…Rhys and Josh argue over whether Hayley should be lead singer of the band. Sarah bribes Holly to make friends with Persephone but Holly drives will only help if there’s some cash involved.

Michaela’s trying to maintain an air of sophistication around Mike. Leila’s smitten as Elliot teaches her how to DJ. Sarah feels awkward around Lydia after using Persephone to get close to her. The Somethings perform their first gig in The Dog. There’s trouble as Michaela sees Sarah and Lydia kissing. Calvin’s full of loathing for Warren but puts on an act in front of him to avoid suspicion. Sarah attempts damage limitation with Michaela as she tries to work out if she’s told anyone about her kiss with Lydia. Elliot reluctantly listens as Archie gives him advice about women.  Leila’s hurt and angry after seeing Sarah and Elliot kiss, but she’s got the wrong end of the stick. Sasha’s fighting her inner demons as she holds Warren’s heroin for him. Mike’s struggling to deal with all the women living in his flat and Myra’s unrequited crush doesn’t help.

Also on Hollyoaks this week:
Leila’s got the hots for Elliot
Josh and Rhys get into a fight
Sarah’s still confused about her sexuality
