Hello and welcome to today’s edition of A Slice Of Soap. There’s still time to enter this week’s caption competition so get scribbling and make us all laugh. What’s going on in soapland this week? Let’s find out…
Well, there’s news circulating that a former EastEnders star may be about to return. According to The Sun, Danniella Westbrook is rumoured to be in talks about a possible comeback. The 35-year-old actress, who played Sam Mitchell before Kim Medcalf took over the role, may be the latest star to pop back to the soap that made her famous in the first place. A source told the newspaper: "The chemistry with Sid Owen as Ricky was exciting stuff. If she returns it will be the talk of soapland for months. This would hark back to the Albert Square brat pack – Ricky, Bianca, Janine and Sam."
The character of Sam Mitchell was last seen in Albert Square in 2005 when she was falsely accused for murdering Den Watts. While on bail, the prospect of prison became too much to handle and Sam supposedly escaped to Brazil. Danniella Westbrook appeared on EastEnders between 1990 and 2000, but her time was marred by drug addiction. She quit the role in 1993, was then asked back in 1995 before producers axed her a year later due to the problems with her ongoing drug habit (it was affecting her work).
In 1999, she was asked to return for a third time, before being axed again in 2000. Kim Medcalf then took over the role between 2002 and 2005. One of the last times I can remember seeing Danniella Westbrook was in 2003’s I’m A Celebrity…, but she quit to return to her family. Well if Leslie Grantham’s Dirty Den can return to the soap after being dead, anyone can really – can’t they? I reckon that if the producers get desperate enough, we may yet see the return of our hero Gus Smith!
