Red Dwarf Comes To Coronation Street

Hello and welcome to today’s edition of A Slice Of Soap. There’s still time to enter the Caption Competition so get scribbling.

Red Dwarf fans are apparently in for a treat when their TV heroes visit the famous cobbles of Coronation Street. I can’t believe I wrote that sentence. Anyway, according to The Sun, episodes of the sci-fi show will see Craig Charles’ roles as Dave Lister and his Corrie alter-ego Lloyd Mullaney in a bizarre crossover (how? HOW?). The newspaper has images of the Red Dwarf crew, including Kryten (Robert Llewelyn) scampering round Weatherfield. According to the tabloid, one of the new episodes was filmed in the location and features Simon Gregson – aka Steve McDonald, cabbie Lloyd’s friend. Apparently the plot sees Kryten and the rest track down Lister on Coronation Street, where he’s playing Lloyd.

Earlier this week, the News of the World revealed that Craig Charles had slammed Coronation Street viewers as the ‘lowest common denominator’.  He complained that he was getting too much hassle from viewers off screen and that this had worsened since his character, taxi firm owner, Lloyd Mullaney, got it together with landlady Liz McDonald.

According to the News of the World, Charles even claimed that the ribbing had prevented him from taking his two daughters to see football matches in Liverpool, and went on to say that ‘nerdy’ sci fi classic Red Dwarf attracted a ‘better class’ of viewer than ‘the Street’. So isn’t it ironic that the stars of Red Dwarf are gonna be making this appearance on the cobbles of Weatherfield? It kind of makes me wonder if it’s some kind of damage limitation exercise, seeing as the News of the World also reported that a furious Coronation Street insider complained that Craig Charles’ comments risked alienating legions of fans of the show.

But hey, soapsters, I wonder if Craig Charles and the Red Dwarf crew may start a new trend in British soap operas? Is it possible that we may now start seeing characters from sci-fi and other TV dramas turning up on the sets of our favourite soaps? Could Shane Richie, who played the beloved Alfie Moon on EastEnders (and is now starring in the brand new series of 1980s hit show Minder), possibly turn up in Walford as Archie Daley? If he did, I bet he could teach young Darren a thing or two about selling dodgy motors to unsuspecting punters; with a shark like Janine Butcher around, he could definitely do with a bit of help right now).

Or perhaps Michelle Ryan – who’s recently won the role of Dr Who’s assistant – could end up bang in the middle of Albert Square in Dr Who’s time travelling machine the Tardis. If that ever happens, could she please kidnap Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell and whisk them off to another dimension somewhere never to be seen again…that would be great.

Anyway, I’m getting a bit carried away. I really do love the idea of this Dave Lister / Lloyd Mullaney crossover and can’t wait to see how it all pans out. Hopefully it will make more sense when the new series of Red Dwarf hits our screens later this year.

That’s it for me, I’m out of here. Join me on Friday for more soap news and gossip and the results of last weeks caption competition. Got a comment about your favourite soap, this blog or anything else? Share it with me.

As she happened to be mentioned in this blog, just thought I\’d pose the question – why does everyone think Michelle Ryan is such a brilliant actress? I can\’t understand it. She\’s as average an actress as you could get.
