Hello and welcome to today’s edition of A Slice Of Soap.
Female fans of EastEnders are going to be left hot under the collar thanks to the arrival of Rolan Bell. At least, that’s what the producers are hoping. The star of reggae musical The Harder They Come is 25 years of age and will play savvy, streetwise character Theo Kelly. Here’s the story: he’ll arrive in Albert Square at the end of the month in search of Patrick Trueman. Why is a mystery. Maybe he’ll turn out to be a relative. Anyway, he’ll be a hit with the ladies on the Square, and with Chelsea Fox in particular.
Rolan Bell has said: "As a lifelong fan of EastEnders, it’s amazing to be part of the show – everyone has been so welcoming on set. Working with actors such as Rudolph Walker has been a dream come true and I can’t wait to see how my character develops on screen." If you’re wondering where you’ve seen him before, he has appeared in Doctors and various stage productions including the brilliant adaptation of the the Jimmy Cliff film The Harder They Come.
So, folks, it looks like Chelsea’s love life is set to bloom. And about time too cos she hasn’t exactly been lucky with men, has she? In the past she’s had brief encounters with the likes of Grant Mitchell and Sean ‘Shout!’ Slater. So will her love life improve once smooth operator Theo hits Walford? Will we finally see a smile on Chelsea’s face (cos she always seems to look so miserable)?
I am a little sceptical about this bloke only because when the EastEnders people hype up their new signings – they rarely work out. Remember the Ferreiras? Bobby Davro (who was gonna be the new Alfie Moon)? The Millers? I’m still not warming to the Mitchell sisters either.
Wouldn’t it be funny if Rolan Bell accidentally slipped back into the Jimmy Cliff character when he first claps eyes on Chelsea? Imagine the cheesy chat-up line: "Ooh Chelsea, baby gal…me love you like cook food y’know!" Roughly translated, that means: ‘Chelsea my dearest, darling angel – to me you are the best thing since sliced bread. I think you are really rather nice.’ I’m joking! I’m looking forward to seeing Rolan Bell on EastEnders. He’s due to appear in February and if you’re curious to know more about this acclaimed young actor, here’s an interview with him talking about his role in the brilliant stage production of the Jimmy Cliff film The Harder They Come.
