Hollywood Comes To The Dales

Hello and Welcome To A Slice Of Soap. So what’s going on in soapland this week? Let’s find out.

Emmerdale w/e Friday January 16

Get ready for a touch of glamour as the rural soap welcomes Brit-born Hollywood stars Amanda Donohoe and Maxwell Caulfield; they make their Emmerdale debut this week. The couple will play self-made millionaires Mark and Natasha Wylde. Personally, I’m rubbing my hands with glee; I can’t wait! Amanda Donohoe appeared in LA Law and I also spotted her in an episode of Frasier. Bad Girls fans will recognise her as Lou Stoke. Maxwell Caulfield’s first major Hollywood role was as Michael Carrington in the terrible, so-bad-it’s-good Grease 2. But he became really famous as Miles Colby in The Colbys. They’re huge names for a soap and I still can’t figure out how Emmerdale has managed to snag them. But who cares! Let’s just enjoy… this week, Jimmy’s torn between his loyalties to his family heritage and his making a new start. Unbeknown to Marlon, Donna visits Ross in prison.

Lily gives Paul some money to buy a ticket to Sydney. Debbie’s furious when she discovers that Jasmine’s planning to follow Ashley and Laurel to their new home in Leeds. Lisa accuses Aaron of stealing from the family pot. Will Chas ever make progress with her bad boy son? Elsewhere, Mark and Natasha begin to get their bearings at Home Farm and reflect on their new country lifestyle. Is Emmerdale ready for the new king and queen of the Dales? Lisa invites Marlon and Donna to Zak’s birthday party but he’s unsure of the reception his wayward wife will receive. Although embarrassed, Marlon insists that the Dingles make Donna feel welcome. Will the party go off with a bang?

Hollyoaks w/e Friday January 16

Now we all know that Hollywoodoaks has its fair share of hot-looking guys and gals…Stephen Beard, who plays Archie Carpenter, recently admitted that he was a bag of nerves when he first started on the show. He said: "It was quite daunting being the new boy… I would say I was a little star-struck by the girls because all teenage blokes appreciate the fact that all the girls on the show are very good looking." That’s a bit of an understatement, isn’t it? In addition to all the lookers, there’s also a good deal of bisexuality too. Sarah’s been messing around with her dad’s girlfriend Zoe and Kris is going to be messing around with both Ravi and Nancy. Sexual inhibitions? What sexual inhibitions? To this week’s action and Nancy’s embarrassed when she wakes and finds Kris lying in bed next to her.

Amy’s attempts to cheer Mike up fail. Steph and Tom make their return to the village after recovering from her ordeal with Niall. Anita’s mortified when she’s accused of still fancying Newt. Sarah and Nancy help Kris with his protest. It’s Tom’s first day back in school and he’s not looking forward to it one bit. A lonely Lauren’s left wondering why everything conspires against her. Frankie and Newt arrive at Steph’s flat and tempers become frazzled, especially Cindy’s. Newt and Lauren decide to take advantage of Frankie’s old flat being empty. Kris offers to help Ravi win Nancy back and suggests he needs to up the ante with a romantic gesture. Cindy fantasises about her rosy future with Ash and his business empire. Cindy and Steph continue to wind each other up. Elliot’s finding Malachy and Mercedes’ company uncomfortable. Cindy wants to visit Darren in prison and begs Steph to come with her.

Coronation Street w/e Friday January 16

It’s a wedding week in Corrie as Molly and Tyrone tie the knot. I think it’s safe to say the following: hell will freeze over before this wedding goes smoothly. George Bush will be the most popular US President ever before this wedding goes smoothly. Prince Harry will appear on Jeremy Kyle to apologise for using a racist term before this wedding goes smoothly. In short, we know all about the unwritten soap rule. Tyrone finds himself staring disaster in the face as he’s arrested for handling stolen goods; will he make it to the church on time? On top of that, poor old Tyrone’s got his meddling mother Jackie to deal with. Anyway, at least the newly weds will be able to get away when they go on their honeymoon with the plane tickets Kevin and Sally bought…or will they?

Elsewhere, Peter’s invited Leanne over to watch a DVD with him and Simon. Steve’s angry with himself and Liz tells him that if he loves Becky, he should finish with Michelle. JD arrives at the Rovers and asks Michelle if she’d like to go on tour with the band again. ‘Damien David ‘ arrives home to find Gary drinking tea in the kitchen with Tina. It’s the day of reckoning for Steve and Becky as Lloyd, sick of Steve’s double standards, blurts out the whole story to Michelle – omigod! Tina’s devastated when she discovers that her dad’s been living in his lock up and demands to know the truth about his financial situation. Becky’s stunned to discover that not only has Steve dumped Michelle but Jason’s started divorce proceedings from Sarah.

EastEnders w/e Friday January 16

We’re well into the post-Sean ‘Shout!’ Slater era and already my eardrums are feeling a lot better for it. But in all seriousness, I’m gonna miss our mentally unstable friend played by actor Rob Kazinsky, but apparently I ain’t the only one. This week, I was reading that ‘Enders producer Diedrick Santer is hunting for a good-looking 20-something-year-old actor to replace the hunky star. Let’s face it, apart from Scott Maslen (Jack Branning), who have EastEnders got that could possibly be a serious contender for the ‘Sexiest Male’ category at various Soap Awards? What…Phil and Billy Mitchell? I don’t think so. Still, never mind the good storylines because what the great British public needs is a regular supply of eye candy…apparently.

Anyway, on with the show… Denise makes a surprising proposal to Lucas. Jean celebrates her birthday, but she’s not feeling well. Stacey asks Danielle to leave. Stacey’s childhood memories come flooding back; Lucas tries to reach out to her with religion. Elsewhere, an inquisitive Dotty asks Dot about the massage parlour. Ian finds Danielle squatting in one of his flats. Peggy’s determined to protest against the new massage parlour. Billy’s frustrated by Jay’s joyriding. Jean’s convinced that Charlie and Mo want her out of the house and Stacey decides to call Jean’s care manager for help. Jay and prossy Marissa continue to bond as Jay’s bought her a new coat. Denise confronts Lucas about Jordan’s revelation but Lucas assures her that he’s commenced divorce proceedings with Trina. Jean takes a turn for the worst.
