Soap Blogger’s 2008 Soap Awards

Hello and welcome to the last 2008 edition of A Slice Of Soap. It’s time to hand out our annual awards….feel free to add your own!

BEST STORYLINE
The Liam/Carla/Tony/Maria foursome in Coronation Street. It had it all: sexual tension, drama, deceit and ultimately, murder.
Runner-up: Hollyoaks’ John Paul and Craig end up together

WORST STORYLINE
The swapped baby nonsense in both Emmerdale and Corrie.
Runner-up: Anything to do with the Mitchell sisters

BEST EXIT
Vera Duckworth passing away at home while Jack was in the Rovers.
Runner-up: Max Cunningham’s heartrending, moving death in Hollyoaks. In addition, the departure of Corrie’s boring bookies was also one of the best exits of the year.

WORST EXIT
Steven Beale leaving for France after his kidnap of sister Lucy was exposed was, frankly, ridiculous. As was just about every storyline involving the youngster.
Runnier-up: Wellard dying. So sad! Poor Wellard!

FUNNIEST EXIT
EastEnders’ Mad May Wright blowing-up the Millers’ house, only to kill herself in the process. I laughed myself silly! It was so over-the-top!

SCARIER SIGHT THAN LIZ McDONALD’S CLEAVEAGE
It’s Coronation Street for those Tony Gordon masks. All the guests on his stag night do wore them and they were absolutely frightening!

BEST SOAP CHARACTER
For me, it has to be Becky Granger in Corrie. She can be ruthless, yet vulnerable. Funny, yet terrifying. She’s sharp as a tack and a real tart-with-a-heart and her relationship with the Croppers is just genius.

WORST SOAP CHARACTER
Take your pick from any of Corrie’s Mandals. Prem was OK at first…but then they had to give him a wife. The way the Windasses are shaping up, they’ll be next on the list.

BEST NEW CHARACTER
Weird Graeme Proctor in Coronation Street is just class! He’s such an oddball and the things he comes out with has me rolling on the floor laughing ("I want to butch…do butchins…be a butcher.")

TOTALLY STRETCHED-BEYOND-CREDIBILITY STORYLINE
EastEnders’ Max Branning being buried alive. Nuff said. It narrowly beats Hollyoaks’ Niall McQueen blowing up the church with his family inside it.

BEST COUPLE OF THE YEAR
I can’t choose between Hollyoaks’ Craig and John-Paul or Hollyoaks’ Max and OB.

BEST SOAP
On balance it has to be Hollyoaks for an astounding number of compelling stories and really intense drama this year.

That’s it for now. Join me on Friday for more soap news and gossip. Got a comment about your favourite soap, this blog or anything else? Share it with me.

I\’m having trouble understanding how a couple who was only on screen for two weeks (and that\’s being very generous) , and at the time wasn\’t even a couple, except for the last five minutes of their final episode, (John Paul and Craig, HO) can win an award for best couple of the year.

  2. Madeleine says:

Because Belle, we\’ve been hoping for their sunset ending since the day they met so although this year they weren\’t a couple for very long, them actually getting together again was FANATASTIC:D

  3. Keith Martin says:
