Hello and welcome to today’s edition of A Slice Of Soap.
Remember Andrew Sachs? You know, Manuel ("Que?"), the star of 1970s sitcom Fawlty Towers? That’s how we’d prefer to remember him – rather than as the poor old grandfather at the centre of the recent Ross / Brand telephone scandal. Anyway, Coronation Street bosses are planning a role for the 78-year-old actor. Apparently, he’s a fan of the show and according to The Daily Mirror, his agent wrote to show executives to ask if he could appear in the soap.
Andrew is rumoured to be written into the soap as the brother of shop assistant Norris Cole, played by Malcolm Hebden. A spokesperson for the soap said: "We first started working on a possible character for Andrew Sachs six months ago after learning that he was interested in joining the show. This was brought to our attention by Malcolm Hebden who plays Norris . We have been in discussions with Andrew about the proposed storyline which would be seen on screen some time next year. There is no connection whatsoever between the Russell Brand and Jonathon Ross saga and our interest in Andrew as this storyline was first discussed in April."
I like the way the Corrie spokesperson was at pains to point out that the role was discussed long before the Brand and Ross telephone scandal. However, if you ask me, he’s definitely come out of it as the winner. Let’s face it, before the telephone scandal, how many people under the age of 30 would actually know who Andrew Sachs was? Christmas has certainly come early for Mr Sachs. I must say, I’m really pleased about this turn of events. I reckon he’ll be great as Norris’ brother, but if I’m to be entirely honest, to me he’ll always be the Spanish waiter Manuel. I hope the writers are taking care to plan his character carefully. I still cringe at the memory of the role they cooked up for Brit legend Sir Norman Wisdom.
In 2004, the sprightly looking 89-year-old (as he was back then) appeared as elderly fitness fanatic Ernie Crabbe who saves Jack Duckworth from a stringent exercise regime. It was embarrassing and unconvincing – most unlike Corrie. With all the publicity attached to Andrew Sachs now, the writers must do him justice. Let’s hope that they do! In order for it to work, they should probably have to make him the complete opposite of Norris. Here’s an idea; maybe his brother could be an old-aged Romeo who’ll compete with Norris for Rita’s affections? Although, there wouldn’t be any competition really cos Norris gets on her nerves. Maybe he’ll get involved in a passionate love triangle with Betty and Emily instead!
That’s it for now. Join me on Friday for more soap news and gossip. Got a comment about your favourite soap, this blog or anything else? Share it with me.
