Corrie’s John Stape Goes Underground

Hello and welcome to today’s edition of A Slice Of Soap. Graeme Hawley may have been playing one of the most hated men in Britain, but he seems to have taken it all in his stride.

His Coronation Street character, John Stape (or Weatherfield’s Brad Pitt as we like to call him, due to the magnetic pull he seems to have on the women on’t Street), has enjoyed one of the juiciest soap storylines of the year. But how has he avoided the publics wrath? "I’ve been staying underground," he said with a laugh during Coronation Street’s Out of Africa DVD launch. "This is a rare public appearance; otherwise I get loads of women chasing me with bags of frozen peas."

See what I mean? Women can’t get enough of Corrie’s answer to Brad Pitt – even if it’s to lob peas at him. All joking aside, he revealed that the public backlash wasn’t as bad as he imagined. "To be honest loads of people have been coming up and saying: ‘Oh, you’re a rotter,’ but people are really enjoying the storyline. I’ve got lots of positive feedback. It’s been great." He hopes there’s a future for John Stape, despite his crime.

I don’t know about you folks, but I hope we haven’t seen the last of John Stape. His character started out so well but now he’s a pitiful mess. Say what you like about him, but he’s certainly brought a lot of drama to The Street.  However, in reality, unless Corrie have plans for another DVD entitled ‘Inside Weatherfield’s Notorious Prisons’, it looks like pantomime beckons for Graeme Hawley.
