Hello and welcome to today’s edition of A Slice Of Soap. You may have seen the pictures of the stars that turned out for Coronation Street’s swanky Out Of Africa DVD launch in my post below. One of the celebs posing for the cameras was bona fide Corrie legend Johnny Briggs.
The Londoner had a 30-year reign on’t cobbles as cocky, Cockney entrepreneur Mike Baldwin. The factory owner was bling long before P Diddy and Jay Z got out of school. Who can forget his gaudy gold jewellery and big fat cigar? Mike Baldwin was a larger-than-life character who loved flaunting his wealth. Well, although actor Johnny Briggs had a role in ITV1 flop Echo Beach earlier this year (remember that show?), he has said he’s getting bored and would love to return to Coronation Street. "I’m finding semi-retirement boring. Very boring," he explained during Coronation Street’s Out Of Africa DVD launch. Asked if he missed Mike, the 72-year-old said: "Yeah, I do. I’d like to play golf with him."
With the Street’s 50th anniversary coming up in December 2010, Johnny Briggs has said he would like to take part in the inevitable celebrations. "Oh yes, of course I would. I mean, I was in it for 30 years and I enjoyed every day. There wasn’t a day where I thought ‘oh, what am I doing here?’ All the cast were great and the technicians were great."
You know what they say? Be careful what you wish for. Former Street hunk actor Rob James-Collier should take careful note. I look forward to seeing what he does next…
