Hello and welcome to today’s edition of A Slice Of Soap. Time to pay attention Hollyoaks fans – there’s a familiar face heading back to the Chester-based soap. Now before I go any further, let me just say that we soap fans are used to people coming and going and coming and going and coming and going….
Anyway Hollyoaks’ Tom Vaughan, who made a splash as Spike by getting involved with John Paul McQueen last year (James Sutton), is making a brief but welcome return. It’s with a view to a permanent role to follow.
Ever since his departure, website Digital Spy has campaigned for his return, and a spokeswoman for Hollyoaks confirmed to the site: "Tom is back for just a few episodes at this stage. We know he’s a real favourite with Digital Spy, so watch this space to see if his return becomes more permanent." They added: "He’s back for some scenes in which there’s a gay night at The Dog."
Spike was left high and dry after his romance with John Paul, who dumped him in favour of best friend Craig Dean (Guy Burnet).
It seems to happen in this genre more than any other. It’s not so common in, say, dramas. Although I remember when George Clooney briefly returned to ER – I was ecstatic. If memory serves, David Duchovny left The X-Files and then returned a couple of times too. But soaps? Well, you’ve only got to look at EastEnders which, this year alone, will welcome back Patsy Palmer (Bianca), Sid Owen (Rickaaaaaay), Charlie Brooks (Janine) and John Altman (‘nasty’ Nick Cotton). Hollyoaks has also seen the return of familiar faces as has Coronation Street. When the characters are good ones, it’s great for fans and the actor in question alike. Top of my wish list remains Ross Kemp (Grant) for EastEnders and Wendi Peters (Cilla) for Coronation Street. Fingers crossed…
