Hello and welcome to Friday’s edition of A Slice Of Soap. Well, it’s awards time again! Question is, will Coronation Street be able to defend its Best Soap crown when the Inside Soap Awards are held on Monday? Or will young upstart Hollyoaks surprise everyone? In 2007, for the first time in a decade, Corrie beat EastEnders to the award for Best Soap. But Hollyoaks might just pull off a sensational win unless EastEnders fans get on the case again.
So who are the top contenders for an Inside Soap Award? It’s a case of the usual suspects really. Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, Home And Away and Neighbours are up for Best Soap. Going head-to-head for this year’s best storyline are Coronation Street (Vera Duckworth’s death) and EastEnders (Max and Stacey Branning’s affair being uncovered).
Also up for an award in the storyline category is Emmerdale (death of baby Daniel) and Hollyoaks (Hannah Ashworth’s eating disorder).
Meanwhile, Gemma Bissix has been shortlisted twice for Best Bitch; she’s up for her role as EastEnders’ Clare Bates, but also for her far superior role as Clare Cunningham in Hollyoaks. Vying for the award in that category is actress Alison King, aka Corries’s Carla Connor and Jennifer Metcalfe for her role as Hollyoaks’ Mercedes McQueen.
Up for Best Bad Boy as well as Best Actor are Corrie’s Jack P Shepherd as ‘Damien’ David Platt and EastEnders’ Robert Kazinsky as Sean Slater (Jack P Shepherd should take it, but if the EastEnders voters do what they usually do, Robert Kazinsky will win). The departing EastEnders star is also shortlisted as Sexiest Male.
Highlights of the awards party will be broadcast on ITV1’s This Morning on Tuesday next week. So if you want your favourite soap to win a gong this year it’s still not too late to vote…you’ve got until noon on Monday.
Anyway, I’m off to vote for the soap character that I felt contributed more to a British soap than any other soap star in living memory…in fact I believe he’s up for the Inside Soap Life Time Achievement Award….. guess who?
That’s it for now. Join me on Monday for a full preview of your favourite soaps. Got a comment on this blog or anything else? Share it with me.
