Corrie’s Reluctant Sex Symbol

Hello and welcome to A Slice Of Soap! Big news today. It emerges that Corrie heartthrob Rob James Collier is apparently quitting because women (and maybe some men too) find him too attractive. No, really! He’s won the Sexiest Male award at the British Soap Awards two years in a row and it’s made him unhappy.

Famous for playing The Street’s Liam Connor, the soap hunk reluctantly accepted the award voted for by the public with a little dig at the whole thing: "Thanks for this award which really reflects acting ability." Ooooo-errrrr missus! Get you! Ouch!

Well, I don’t know about you, but if I’d voted for Rob, I’d be a bit miffed at that. Even if he doesn’t appreciate the sentiments behind the award, it’s still voted for by fans.

Where would he be without the people that adore him? They’re the same people that have put him in a position where he feels he can now leave Coronation Street behind.

Rob told New! magazine: "In a way this is why I am glad to be leaving the show. You can work your nuts off acting-wise, but as soon as you appear on screen in a towel, bingo, you’re the sexiest male." Determined to become a "serious actor", he has vowed not to sign on the dotted line until the right role comes along. He said: "I won’t be doing panto. I want to be taken seriously as an actor and that means landing the right part." OK. Whatever.

It’s fine to want to be taken seriously, but two genres guarantee TV actors work in this country and one of them is the genre Rob James Collier’s leaving: soaps. The other one is the one that he won’t do: panto. Terrestrial TV broadcasters can’t afford to invest in quality dramas like they used to pre multi-channel TV so he’d better polish his singing tonsils for a stage musical (like Brookside’s Claire Sweeney) or polish his American accent and head to the US like ex soap stars Anna Friel and not-quite-famous Sean Maguire (has he done anything that’s been a hit and made him a name yet?). Will Rob James Collier make it outside of Corrie? Maybe. Let’s just hope he doesn’t put his name to a flop like screen brother Sean Gallagher, last seen in Rock Rivals.

  1. james says:

rob james collier knows as much about acting as i know about piloting concorde

  2. Tia says:

Well I can understand why he\’s leaving. His hard work pays off with being rewarded for being attractive. Imagine only being awarded in a job you work your socks off for, for being good looking. If he wants to go onto more serious things, there are dramas etc that he can go on, but I can\’t see him getting a job bigger or as big as corrie.

  3. laurie says:

He\’ll end up like Chris Quentin ( wasn\’t he last seen as a doorman at a night club) Oh dear

  4. Danielle says:

I don\’t think Rob is all that, well ok, he\’s the best in soap land I suppose but not on telly. I agree with Miss Baubles that he may have problems getting work due to the quality of tv programmes. I really can\’t see him in another programme at the moment unless a series was created 4 him, erm …… we will all have 2 wait & see. I\’ll miss him on the street, he\’s a funny guy.

    All the best Rob

  5. ann says:

the most unsexy thing about a man, is when his head is up his own bum!
He\’s no Richard Burton or Anthony Hopkins.

  6. Joan says:

they all leave but most come back look at bianca on  eastenders he will be back!

  7. Unknown says:

how ungratefull he seems so stuck up his own backside
im sorry but id appriciate it he was up against the georgous jack (eastenders)
haha ! hell have no fans if he carries on i used to love him in corrie
    but hate him now 😡

  8. Marian says:

I couldn\’t see why he got the job in corrie anyway, he can\’t act and he even finds it difficult to speak clearly good riddens.

  9. eileen says:

I think he should take what is offered to him, he should practice trying to speak so people can understand what it is he is trying to say.

  10. Tia says:

I\’m guessing all of the people (except jimmy at the bottom) who have commented are women, and how would you like it if you got a promotion or a pay rise because your boss thought you were attractive? He obviously feels like his acting talent (which he does have, I can always hear what he is saying and Liam is a believable character…) is being ignored, and he is only being rewarded for his appearance. If he thinks that moving from Coronation Street will make people take him more seriously as an actor, then that\’s what he should do.

  11. Jess says:

Omg Ive Never Seen Anyone As Gawjus As Him 😛
I Dont Want Him To Leave Corrie 😦 It Wont Be The Same But I Can Understand That He Wants To Be Taken Seriously As An Actor And So Would I !! I Reckon He Will Actully Get Somewhere Like In Something Dead Big And Become Even More Famous Than He Is Now ! Because Hes Got The Actin Skills To Do That 🙂 && Claire He\’ll Always Have Fans…And I\’ll Be One Of Them 🙂

  12. Carole says:

Well Rob Collier may be gorgeous and I have to agree but he is hardly a good actor and let\’s face it he can\’t speak properly… If he can get by on looks alone good for him, but I very much doubt it. Talent is what\’s needed! I agreed with everyone else until I heard his ungrateful comments… So Rob,  you\’ve certainly gone down in my estimation..

  13. Claire says:

ROB COLLIER IS GOOD LOOKING BUT I\’D RATHER HAVE SEXY SHAWN SLATER.

  14. anna says:

good on rob collier for wanting to be taken seriously as an actor and not just a sex symbol. i will miss him on the street. he is easy on the eye, but good luck for the future. prove all the doubters wrong
