Coronation Street’s really boring couple Ashley and Clurrrrrrr Peacock are apparently set to share a problem with many real-life viewers when they are hit by the credit crunch.
The Weatherfield regulars (played by Steven Arnold and Julia Haworth) will reportedly fall prey to the troubled economic climate in a topical storyline. A source told The Sun: "We keep our storylines current. People who are experiencing similar problems will identify with the plot." Yeah, maybe they will – but will they care? That’s the $64,000,000 question. After all, we’re not talking about Steve and The Rovers – it’s Ashley and Clurrrrrrr.
If they aren’t a couple well past their sell-by date, I don’t know who is. Talk about living on borrowed time; since the sad depature of Fred "Ah say" Elliott, none of their storylines have worked. Not one. Julia Haworth will soon take maternity leave so we know her absence has to be accounted for somehow.
On the show, Ashley and Clurrrrrrrr have been raiding their savings to keep their business, Ashley’s beloved butcher’s shop, in the black. However, the reality of their situation is rammed home when Claire’s credit card is declined in the middle of a store. She wastes no time calling up the bank to get to the bottom of the problem – and it’s then she finds out the extent of their problems. The bank tells her the card is over its limit – and the current account has been stripped too.
Shamefaced Ashley tells her: "I’ll arrange a new limit and everything will be OK." And, just like in real life, their bank won’t extend the credit – so Claire cuts up Ashley’s cards. The pair apparently end up selling their home to Kevin and Sally Webster. Is it the end of the road for Ashley and his family? I hope so but I won’t hold my breath….
