EastEnders And Hollyoaks Take Top Honours

Hello and welcome to A Slice Of Soap!

Entertainment website Digital Spy has branched out into the world of awarding soaps. In their inaugural Soap Awards, EastEnders and Hollyoaks took top honours. The BBC soap triumphed in seven of the 14 categories, voted for by Digital Spy members. The awards it won included the coveted one of Best Soap and Best Single Episode, for Phil and Stella’s wedding. Jo Joyner (Tanya Branning) was named Most Popular Actress ahead of Corrie’s Tina O’Brien and ‘Enders colleague Lacey Turner.

Hollyoaks bagged five gongs, including Storyline of the Year for John Paul and Craig’s gay affair. James Sutton (John Paul McQueen) was named Most Popular Actor.

Coronation Street took home just one accolade. Jack P Shepherd won Villain of the Year for his role as Weatherfield’s troubled David ‘Damian’ Platt. If I was a Coronation Street writer, I’d be worried about opening my letters in case it’s my P45. Clearly, something is very wrong because Corrie lost out to The Bill at the Royal Television Society Awards and, for the first time in ages, it isn’t even up for a Bafta TV Award. Holby City is nominated, but Corrie isn’t. Imagine being associated with Corrie and knowing that your soap is beaten to a Bafta by Holby City. Holby City! For ages now, myself and the people commenting on this blog, have been saying that Corrie has lost its way. It let really bad storylines drag on for too long: Violet/Sean baby rubbish and the baby swap non-drama for starters. So I’m not surprised that Corrie’s getting snubbed left, right and centre. It’s time the old soap pulled its socks up and went back to basics. Get rid of the deadwood and get some proper storylines back. Stop trying to be too sensationalist and go back to what you do best.

Hopefully this will have given the corrie script writers a wake-up call. They need to find at least one really good, gripping storyline. when Corrie\’s good, it is really good, as it can be hilarious with the older people, but when it is rubbish, it is awful!

  2. Jemma says:

glad some awards were won for hollyoaks shame they didnt win the best soap award because to me tthey are bascically the best soap at the min eastenders and corrie have really gone downhill!

  3. Tia says:

Eastenders isn\’t as bad as Coronation Street. At least Eastenders can leave you in suspense, ok the burrying alive story was a bit out of line, but at least it makes you wonder about next weeks story. We all already know next weeks stories in Coronation street, baby swap, and other idiotic rubbish.

  4. tammy says:

hollyoaks best soap ever at least they cover normal every day story lins such as heroin adiction and date rape

  5. peter says:

surely the Best dog winner should go to Shirley and not wellard. and Best On-Screen Partnership- shirley and wellard.

HOLLYOAKS!!! Hollyoaks Should\’ve won BEST SOAP! Storylines are brilliant n not as stupidly far fetched as eastenders and corrie is just plain old BORING. Woop! Go Hollyoaks! Lol

  7. Adam says:

I am glad that Jo Joyner who plays Single Mum Tanya Branning in EastEnders has won an award as she been a wicked Actress to watch as she was not known very well until she came in to EastEnders. Lacey Turner who plays Stacey is the still the BEST!! Coronation Street is the most rubbish Soap in the World…I rather Watch an hour of Emmerdale than Watch an hour on Corrie on A Monday n Wed!! BORING!!
