Hello and welcome to A Slice Of Soap!
I’m opening today with another piece of news concerning an imminent cast change. You’ve probably heard by now that Freddie Jones, who plays cheeky loveable rogue, Sandy Thomas, is leaving Emmerdale after two years in the soap.
Anita Turner, Emmerdale’s new series producer, said: "Freddie has been an asset to the show and will be greatly missed but we hope this won’t be the last we see of Sandy."
Freddie added: "I regard it as a privilege to have worked with such amazing people who are 100 per cent professional and work together incredibly well after so many years. Any problems are buried in laughter. I’m looking forward to spending more time at home but Sandy may well be back in the future."
Well let’s hope that the 80-year-old actor will make a return to the Dales in the future…although something tells me there’s more chance of hell freezing over than that happening. I think it’s great to see older characters in soaps if they’re well written – like Corrie’s Blanche Hunt for example. Look at EastEnders for example. With the exception of Stacey Slater, the best characters are the older ones: Peggy Mitchell, Pat Evans, Jim and Dot Branning…talking of Dot….
Did anyone watch EastEnders last night? I was looking forward to the Dot Branning special (although to me, she’ll always be Dot Cotton) and it didn’t disappoint overall – some parts dragged a little but other parts were brilliant. June Brown proved yet again that she’s an amazing actress if she’s got a decent script. I bet when the doctors play that cassette to Jim, it will have the desired effect; he’ll sit up and groan: "Fer gawd’s sake woman, give it a rest!" Credit to EastEnders for trying something different. What did you guys think of it? Let me know here.
So we’re counting down to Gus’ departure from EastEnders. Here’s a cryptic conundrum for you. What connects the vehicle below to Mohammed George, the actor who plays Gus?
Answer: It’s for his career. It will need rescuing after he leaves EastEnders
