Corrie’s Ken To Get His Hands Dirty

Hello and welcome to A Slice of Soap.

I suppose, like me, some of you may have been wondering where the Barlows have disappeared to. We haven’t seen much of them on Corrie lately, have we? A pity because the uneasy relationship between Ken and his battleaxe of a mother-in-law Blanche can be really funny.  Anyway here’s a story that you may find amusing. It appears that Ken Barlow is set to take over Roy Cropper’s cafe:

Coronation Street’s Ken Barlow is set to take over the running of Roy Cropper’s cafe, when actor David Neilson takes a two-month break from the soap.

Ken, played by 75-year-old Bill Roache, will don a pinny to run the cafe with Becky Granger (Katherine Kelly) with amusing results, after Roy heads to Africa to join wife Hayley in her charity work, reports the Daily Star.

In real life, actor David, 58, is taking time out of the soap to make his first stage appearance in 13 years when he stars in a production of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting For Godot in Manchester. Julie Hesmondhalgh, who plays Hayley, is taking a year off to spend time with her family.

Now that should be something; Ken Barlow and Becky running Roy’s cafe? Talk about a classic mismatch. That’s the equivalent of Gordon Ramsay and Delia Smith sharing a kitchen. It just wouldn’t work, but it should make for some good TV viewing, hopefully.

Something else that struck me when I read the story. Bill Roache’s age. I can’t believe that he’s 75-years-old. He looks so good! Has he got a fountain of youth in his back garden? He looks great for his age, but then again I suppose he’s got to keep himself in shape if he’s ever gonna achieve the record of longest serving actor ever on a television series. He’s been in the show since it started way back in 1960.

Did you think Bill Roache already had that title in the bag? Not according to Wikipedia. The record for the longest serving actor on a television series is actually held by Helen Wagner, who has played matriarch Nancy Hughes on the US soap As the World Turns since April 2, 1956.

By the way Corrie actress Julia Haworth, who plays boring Clurrrrrrrrrr Peacock, is pregnant. This can only be good news as maybe the Corrie writers will take the opportunity to write out the Peacocks. Corrie is in one of its lulls and after assessing the soap post-the Duckworths, I’ll be writing about the characters that need to go and why. However, feel free to post your nominations here. I’ve started with the Peacocks who are clearly lost without Fred ‘ah say’ Elliot.

yep..  don\’t like the Peacocks.. I don\’t think Ashley needs to talk like that…

  2. theresa says:

don\’t see the point of the pregnant barmaid!!

  3. Dave says:

There is no need for these sados to make comments about corri ,  IF YOU DONT LIKE IT  TURN IT OFF!!!!

  4. Pat says:

Dev seems a bit extra to requirements these days – he\’s getting too old to be Corrie\’s gigolo and decent storylines for him must now be really difficult, unless he suddenly meets someone and gets married.  Oh wait a minute – he\’s already married to a woman we never see!  Also, he gets on my nerves when he does say anything – he only has about three lines a week and tries to make them sound like he\’s spouting Shakespeare!

Clurrrrr should run Ashley over when she\’s driving her cab and then reverse and run Violet over!  She should then take a fatal overdose because she can\’t live with her guilty conscience……

Dave, there is a call to action at the bottom of all Spaces posts: it says \’add a comment\’. It\’s there for a reason…. Thanks for all your suggestions guys; I\’m in total agreement. Pregnant barmaid Violet (Jenny Platt) is going and so is Jamie (Rupert Hil). They\’re a couple onscreen and off – so that\’s two down. A few more to go…

  7. marion says:

Poor old Vera she wil be very much missed, but if Jack stays I can see a bit of fun on the horizon for us viewers.

The whole mob of soaps is pathetic – they should all be scrapped or failing that shoved on to a channel of their own so that right minded folks don\’t have to put up with them whilst the other half is watching them. They don\’t do a lot for the education of our kids either.  Jimbo In Spain

  9. theresa says:

the story line regarding michelle and ryan is just ridiculous!!

  10. shelley says:

if these people all think that soaps are so sad, why are they reading about them in the first place, if there are more iinteresting things to do, then instead of moaning about the programmes that thousands of people watch, then go do them

  11. Unknown says:

Love Corrie, the only soap I really keep up with. Very sad to see Vera go. Can\’t stand the Liam, Maria, Carla thing that\’s going on. Dev past his sell by date as is Norris. Glad Jamie and Violet goin, hope to see more of Sean though. Love Becky and Sophie, funniest characters on the show and looking forward to seeing old fave Ken get a bit more action! Also, why does Michelle do nowt but moan and whine? She should be locked in the cellar of the Rovers and give us all a break!!

  12. Unknown says:

Some nominations get rid of, firstly the Mortons they just dont fit in, when voilet goes get her to take her irritating sister with her. and as for Michelle please give her less air time, sick of her whining and saying ryaaaaan the storyline is absurd, I have watched corrie since it began in the 60s but it has recently become full of irritating characters and silly storylines, lets see more of Ken and Deidre and Blanche and Sophie too shes great and whats happened to Leane and the only resturant in town, it might be a good idea to bring back Bradley Walsh and inject some humor!

  13. Laura says:

I LOVE Corrie but the Conners are sooooooooo boring!!! Maria is really starting 2 bug me now cos she just moans on and on…Michelle needs some help cos all she is doing is crying ALL the time. I can not STAND David Platt!! I wish his suicide attempt had worked!

  14. Gloria says:

Why have they brought in the 2 characters playing bookies.  Not needed and very boring storyline.  Do not fit into the corrie soap.  More like gangsters.

  15. Carol says:

Someone in a previous comment said,I hope they don\’t axe Jack as well.If you are a true follower of Coronation St. you would know that Liz Dawn\’s character,Vera was not axed, The actress herself chose to leave the soap drama due to ill health. Her death scenes and the effect they have had on Jack,PAUL,Tyrone ,Molly and the rest of the characters has been portrayed by each one superbly.
Well written and very moving.I am looking forward to the forthcoming storyline which will be when Ken runs the cafe temporarily alongside Becky, both characters excellently played.Although each character is probably equal in the drama.I cannot help but feel that William Roache, who of course plays Ken Barlow, should be especially thanked for giving us so many years of that well loved and might I add respected member of the street. Coronation street has always been my favourite,I try never to miss it and I\’M  a Southerner! Carol Grant.
