Hello and welcome to A Slice of Soap.
I suppose, like me, some of you may have been wondering where the Barlows have disappeared to. We haven’t seen much of them on Corrie lately, have we? A pity because the uneasy relationship between Ken and his battleaxe of a mother-in-law Blanche can be really funny. Anyway here’s a story that you may find amusing. It appears that Ken Barlow is set to take over Roy Cropper’s cafe:
Coronation Street’s Ken Barlow is set to take over the running of Roy Cropper’s cafe, when actor David Neilson takes a two-month break from the soap.
Ken, played by 75-year-old Bill Roache, will don a pinny to run the cafe with Becky Granger (Katherine Kelly) with amusing results, after Roy heads to Africa to join wife Hayley in her charity work, reports the Daily Star.
In real life, actor David, 58, is taking time out of the soap to make his first stage appearance in 13 years when he stars in a production of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting For Godot in Manchester. Julie Hesmondhalgh, who plays Hayley, is taking a year off to spend time with her family.
Now that should be something; Ken Barlow and Becky running Roy’s cafe? Talk about a classic mismatch. That’s the equivalent of Gordon Ramsay and Delia Smith sharing a kitchen. It just wouldn’t work, but it should make for some good TV viewing, hopefully.
Something else that struck me when I read the story. Bill Roache’s age. I can’t believe that he’s 75-years-old. He looks so good! Has he got a fountain of youth in his back garden? He looks great for his age, but then again I suppose he’s got to keep himself in shape if he’s ever gonna achieve the record of longest serving actor ever on a television series. He’s been in the show since it started way back in 1960.
Did you think Bill Roache already had that title in the bag? Not according to Wikipedia. The record for the longest serving actor on a television series is actually held by Helen Wagner, who has played matriarch Nancy Hughes on the US soap As the World Turns since April 2, 1956.
By the way Corrie actress Julia Haworth, who plays boring Clurrrrrrrrrr Peacock, is pregnant. This can only be good news as maybe the Corrie writers will take the opportunity to write out the Peacocks. Corrie is in one of its lulls and after assessing the soap post-the Duckworths, I’ll be writing about the characters that need to go and why. However, feel free to post your nominations here. I’ve started with the Peacocks who are clearly lost without Fred ‘ah say’ Elliot.
That’s it for now. Join me on Friday for more soap gossip. Got a comment about your favourite soap, this blog or anything else? Share it with me.
