Five Episodes of EastEnders?

Hello and welcome to A Slice Of Soap.

Hey, are you one of those crazy soap fans that wants to see an extra episode of EastEnders? Well if you are, read the following story:

It seems that fans keen to see an extra episode of EastEnders every week will have to make do with their current four-nights-a-week fix for the foreseeable future. Rumours have been circulating for some time that the BBC is planning to add another half-hour of Albert Square action to its schedules, but the chairman of the BBC TRUST, Sir Michael Lyon, has spoken out against the reports, suggesting that in order to continue providing quality entertainment to the nation, the corporation must cease to be so focused on London.

" The executive’s recent decision not to commission a fifth weekly episode reflects their response to our challenge to them
to keep BBC schedules distinctive," says Sir Michael, loftily.  However, should Beeb bosses change their minds, EastEnders’executive producer, Diederick Santer, would embrace the addition to the soap’s workload.  "I don’t think it would make a difference to the quality of the show at all," reckons Diederick. "I could make five great episodes every week with this team."

I don’t know about you but I agree with Sir Michael; we don’t need another episode of EastEnders; four is definitely enough. I reckon we’ve already got far too many episodes of individual soaps on our screens and it seems now to be a case of quantity rather than quality.

Think about it for moment, we’ve already got five episodes of Coronation Street, five episodes of Emmerdale and the same with "Hollywoodoaks". It makes you wonder how we used to get by with just one episode of Coronation Street a week (on Mondays). Can you imagine if ITV went back down that road? Some of us would have severe soap withdrawal symptoms…(including myself). But then again, if one episode fewer per week would ensure greater quality in the writing, I’m all for it.

Anyway going back to the above story, I couldn’t quite work out what Sir Michael Lyon meant when he stated: "in order to continue providing quality entertainment to the nation, the corporation must cease to be so focused on London." What I want to know is how on earth would an extra episode of EastEnders cause the BBC to be overly focused on London?  It seems to me that Sir Michael is beating around the bush…He goes on to state that the reason for not having a fifth weekly episode of EastEnders is to keep BBC schedules "distinctive" but you and I know that what he’s really trying to say is that EastEnders ain’t good at the moment and that a fifth episode is out of the question (that’s putting things in plain English).

I totally agree with Sir Michael, four episodes of ‘Enders is more than enough. As for EastEnders’ executive producer, who believes that he can make five great episodes every week, he must be living in cloud coo-coo land if he thinks that an extra episode of ‘Enders won’t affect the quality of the soap (they can just about produce four good episodes a month).  Four episodes of EastEnders a week is more than enough thank you very much…we want quality not quantity. That’s my view – what’s yours?

It can\’t be an accident that Emmerdale\’s gone down the pan since the increase in episodes. I also remember when Corrie used to be on once a week, it was big news when they added Wednesdays. Now you can\’t escape any of the soaps. There\’s far too many episodes on.

  2. richard says:

What have you been watching since may? From the Mad May storyline. we\’ve seen the demise of brilliant Stella, the mitchell sisters in town, Stax being revealed very soon and some of the best characters arriving in years. Diederick Santer has transformed the place! EE is back on top.

  3. laurie says:

too many episodes of all of them is too much I used to watch all of them when they were on twice a week , now I only watch Corrie
and that at the moment is if I feel like it . They keep pluging Digital TV I\’d rather stay as we are and have better programes.

  4. Claire says:

I agree there are far to many soaps on esp on monday.  Until they can come up with descent story lines, why have another half an hour a week to watch at the moment is rubbish. Emmerdale are seroiusly going down hill. cut back at least 2 shows a week.

  6. Clare says:

…I think Eastenders should be on 5 days a week…I love it and can\’t wait for the christmas episodes…x

  7. gail says:

the stacey and brady story line has had me and my daughter at the edge of  are seats, we cant wait until xmas when it all come out poor max………ha ha ha

  8. Jason says:

Five episodes of drudgery every week? If it wasn\’t for Spooks and the occasional news bulletin, I would have given up on most of the BBC. Eastenders remains the most depressing and downmarket soap we have – and that\’s really saying something!

I think the BBC is right to concentrate outside London. A lot of tv is so low quality these days I for one look more towards the USA, their soaps, comedies, sitcoms, and even dramas.

We need something aspirational on tv from the beeb. Something ambitious and bold. Why not give some new ideas a whirl and scrap Eastenders completely.

What are the writers trying to do to us all commit mass suicide.Christmas Eastenders a laugh a minute i flippin well think not.Lets have some real Northern humour to spice it up.humour that we can all understand put someone like \’\’COUNT ARTHUR STRONG\’\’ in it he will soon brighten things up \’\’PRODUCERS TAKE NOTICE\’\’. IF you want to hear C.A.S. Tune in to Radio 4 at 11.30 am. on the 28th.Dec and you will be entertained. \’\’WARNING THIS SHOW CAN BE VERY ADDICTIVE\’\’ BE WARNED. B.H.

ld like to add to the debate over East Enders. I believe that the present four a week is more than enough. Perhaps it could be reduced to Monday and Wednesday with the omnibus edition on Friday. That will clear the weekend for, should I even hope, some better viewing at weekends. I think that the whole of the progamme listings should be reviewed. Less reality and soaps. After promises, from both organisations, to revamp the scheduling, we find even more soaps being dreamed up and addition of any idea where you can lump a number of celebrities, or want to be\’s, together, in the name of entertainment.

  11. Ben says:

I think Eastenders is great and it would be good to finally give Corrie some competition. But they should change timings and days.
e.g.  Sunday 7:30, Monday 9:00, Tuesday 8:30, Wednesday 9:00, Thursday (no episode so they can show more Waterloo Road!!!!!), Friday 8:00, Saturday morning 10:00am-12:00am (as a regular omnibus slot!)
