Hello and welcome to A Slice Of Soap.
Hey, are you one of those crazy soap fans that wants to see an extra episode of EastEnders? Well if you are, read the following story:
It seems that fans keen to see an extra episode of EastEnders every week will have to make do with their current four-nights-a-week fix for the foreseeable future. Rumours have been circulating for some time that the BBC is planning to add another half-hour of Albert Square action to its schedules, but the chairman of the BBC TRUST, Sir Michael Lyon, has spoken out against the reports, suggesting that in order to continue providing quality entertainment to the nation, the corporation must cease to be so focused on London.
" The executive’s recent decision not to commission a fifth weekly episode reflects their response to our challenge to them to keep BBC schedules distinctive," says Sir Michael, loftily. However, should Beeb bosses change their minds, EastEnders’executive producer, Diederick Santer, would embrace the addition to the soap’s workload. "I don’t think it would make a difference to the quality of the show at all," reckons Diederick. "I could make five great episodes every week with this team."
I don’t know about you but I agree with Sir Michael; we don’t need another episode of EastEnders; four is definitely enough. I reckon we’ve already got far too many episodes of individual soaps on our screens and it seems now to be a case of quantity rather than quality.
Think about it for moment, we’ve already got five episodes of Coronation Street, five episodes of Emmerdale and the same with "Hollywoodoaks". It makes you wonder how we used to get by with just one episode of Coronation Street a week (on Mondays). Can you imagine if ITV went back down that road? Some of us would have severe soap withdrawal symptoms…(including myself). But then again, if one episode fewer per week would ensure greater quality in the writing, I’m all for it.
Anyway going back to the above story, I couldn’t quite work out what Sir Michael Lyon meant when he stated: "in order to continue providing quality entertainment to the nation, the corporation must cease to be so focused on London." What I want to know is how on earth would an extra episode of EastEnders cause the BBC to be overly focused on London? It seems to me that Sir Michael is beating around the bush…He goes on to state that the reason for not having a fifth weekly episode of EastEnders is to keep BBC schedules "distinctive" but you and I know that what he’s really trying to say is that EastEnders ain’t good at the moment and that a fifth episode is out of the question (that’s putting things in plain English).
I totally agree with Sir Michael, four episodes of ‘Enders is more than enough. As for EastEnders’ executive producer, who believes that he can make five great episodes every week, he must be living in cloud coo-coo land if he thinks that an extra episode of ‘Enders won’t affect the quality of the soap (they can just about produce four good episodes a month). Four episodes of EastEnders a week is more than enough thank you very much…we want quality not quantity. That’s my view – what’s yours?
