Bye Bye Cilla!

Hello Soapsters – welcome to A Slice Of Soap!
Oh woe is me! Wendi Peters will make her last appearance as brassy Cilla Battersby-Brown on Corrie this evening. She’s finally come into a bit of money and will be leaving Weatherfield to start a new life in Las Vegas.
I still can’t believe that our Cilla’s off. She’s one of the funniest characters that we’ve seen on’t Street in a long time and she will definitely be missed. Let’s look back at the wonderfully vulgar, selfish Cilla, shall we? She first appeared on our screens as a barmaid in the Weatherfield Arms where she met Les Battersby who was pretending to be a record producer; she was also trying to pass herself off as a singer by the name of ‘Lulu’.
Cilla and Les were a comedy match made in heaven. They’ve had some hilarious storylines over the years – storylines that kept us all laughing. Who can forget the time she nearly burned down the chip shop she was working in after trying to deep-fry her Christmas turkey?
And how about the time when she asked Les to propose so that they could get some new gear as wedding presents? Only Cilla could come up with such an outrageous idea. The look on her face when she walked into the back room where Les – in imitation of his idols, Status Quo – had trashed all the presents, including her widescreen TV! It still brings a smile to my face when I think about it.
I suppose one of the most memorable Cilla storylines was back in November 2006 when we got to see her softer side. Cilla discovered that she was suffering from skin cancer and that Les had cheated on her with her best friend Yana. Cilla got her revenge in a typically unique way – the memory of Les and Yana sitting outside on the pavement in a bath full of beans will warm me on winter nights to come. This is the kind of funny moment that Coronation Street writers can do in their sleep and in Cilla, they had a comedy gift from the gods. That’s why it’s so sad to see Wendi Peters leave the show. I was so sure Les and Cilla would take on the mantle of the Street’s tragic/comic stay-together-no-matter-what couple; a position filled in the past by Stan and Hilda Ogden and then Jack and Vera Duckworth. Alas, it’s not to be. Who will the Corrie writers turn to next for comedy gold moments? It ain’t gonna be Ashley and Clurrrrrrrr that’s for sure.
Cilla Battersby-Brown has been a larger than life character and will be sorely missed by many. Let’s hope that it won’t be too long before we see her back on our screens again.
That’s all from me for now join me on Monday for a full preview of your favourite soaps. Got a comment about  this blog or anything else? Share it with me.

    Message to Fay…..
If you don’t like Cilla, Blanche, Norris or Janice….what exactly are you doing watching Corrie? They make the soap!!!!….Do you have a sense of humour?
Cilla is one of the best characters of Corrie. She’s; coarse, cocky and completely crackers and will be a great loss to the soap. What are we going to do without her? I will surely miss her mad moments with her son “ Chesnaaaaaaaaaaaaay” the evil look , her raucous laugh and all the scams that she tried to pull over the years. What a star!!!!!
