There were one or two surprises but on the whole it was all fairly predictable. Coronation Street took Best Soap…you mean, they actually beat Emmerdale this year? I can’t believe it! That’s a joke. Coronation Street has had some great storylines this year and deserved to take the main prize over EastEnders which has been mediocre apart from the Stella/Ben abuse storyline. In addition, nobody does comedy better than Corrie. So for making us laugh (Cilla and Blanche), shocked (‘Damian’ David’s antics) and sad (Deirdre’s anguish over her rotten daughter), Corrie deserved it.
Shock as Jack P Shephard won Best Bad Boy…not. We all knew that was going to happen. I mean, who can touch ‘Damian’ David Platt when it comes to being bad? He makes Sean ‘Shout’ Slater and Charlie Stubbs look like a couple of pantomime villans…He’s in a class of his own right now.
Antony Cotton picked up the Best Actor award. How he’s managed to do that is beyond me. He’s hardly had any major decent storylines, which is why he’s been able to find the time to host his own chat show. Has anyone seen it? Lets just say that he won’t be winning any prizes for that. Give me Paul O’ Grady any day. Lacey Turner who plays Stacey Slater on EastEnders took the Best Actress Award and Best Couple alongside Charlie Clements. Again – no surprise. She’s had some pretty good storylines and with the Stacey/Bradley wedding fast approaching, we’ll all be glued to the box because no soap wedding ever goes smoothly. However, that’s what EastEnders needs – more gripping storylines. Admittedly, they got the Stella tormenting Ben storyline right – that was disturbing and a must-see…let’s just hope they keep moving in the same direction.
The only other major acting gong was won by Emmerdale. Washing the dishes might be more fun than Emmerdale is at the moment, but I’m pleased little Eden Taylor-Draper (who plays Belle Dingle) took an award home. She’s one of the better child actors around in a soap. Hollyoaks’ Roxanne McKee (who plays Louise Summers) won their only award; Sexiest Female. Hollyoaks winning an award based on the looks of their cast? Big surprise…not. One other thing is that the great Maggie Jones who plays Deirdre’s trying mum Blanche was robbed. She should’ve won Funniest Character instead of Charlie Hardwick who plays Val Lambert on Emmerdale. Blanche could read the phone book and make me laugh.
